Land Clearing

Land Clearing and Site Prep

Clear the lot, pull the stumps, fill the holes and ready the ground for a foundation, a road or a geothermal field. Tom Oesch's crews, out of Atlanta, Michigan.

Logged ground and stumps everywhere

A property gets logged and the loggers leave. What stays behind is stumps in every direction, slash piles and holes where the roots came out. That is what Jamie Cutler had on his 12 acres: logged in 2018, stumps everywhere, and nothing he could build on, park on or drive across.

Wet ground is the other trouble. A trench dug in soft, saturated soil caves in and fills with water as fast as it opens, and a machine on the wrong footing sinks to its tracks.

Clearing a lot the wrong way costs you twice. Stump holes settle under a pad or a road, and then somebody has to come back and haul what was left in piles.

Clear the lot, then prep the ground

Tom Oesch's crews start by clearing the lot. Trees come down, and we dispose of the trees and all rubbish, so nothing is left behind for you to burn or haul. Our orange Hitachi excavators do the heavy lifting and our own operators run them.

Then the ground gets readied to build on. We do site prep for foundations, road building and geothermal installs, so the crew that cleared your lot can leave it ready for the next trade.

Trenching has its own methods. For laser trenching, the trench grade is set off a laser level on a tripod while the operator works the bucket from the cab. For ground that stays soft and wet, we run wet land trenching. Both are shown in the gallery sets below.

Holes filled, nothing left in piles

On Jamie's job the crew removed the stumps and filled in the holes. That is the finish we aim for on every clearing: stump holes filled, ground left open and usable, no piles standing where you wanted a yard.

Camp clearings and deer plots come out ready to use. Jamie had about 3/4 of an acre cleared for camping and a road run around his 12 acres, all out of one clearing job with Tom and his operator.

“I had them clear about 3/4 of an acre for camping and a nice road around my 12 acres. The property was logged in 2018 and had stumps everywhere. They removed the stumps and filled in the holes for me.”
